Episode Transcript
[00:00:06] Hi there, and welcome to the Confessions from the Home Office podcast. I'm Wendy Hill, and each week I bring an episode to you about marketing, working from home, running my business out of my house, or an interview with a. With a great business owner. And I was thinking about the podcast this past week, and. And I thought, you know, the title of the podcast is Confessions from the Home Office, and I don't think I'm confessing enough, and I have a lot to confess. So this week, the episode is not about marketing. It's not about juggling things from home and raising children and being married and all that. And it's not an interview with a great guest. But this is something that is going on in my house. And if you think I'm crazy after you hear this story, that's fine, because I know I'm not crazy. We have a ghost in our house.
[00:00:58] We've lived here since 2008. And it was probably around 2012, 2013, my son said to me, the strangest thing happened.
[00:01:12] I saw you upstairs in a bathrobe and with a towel on, like you would just. We're getting ready to get ready. And I didn't know why you were upstairs, because my bedroom, bathroom is downstairs. The children are upstairs.
[00:01:26] And he looked across the, kind of the foyer. The upstairs of our house is kind of a circle and open, and his bedroom's kind of in one corner. And he looked across and he was like, mom, what are you doing up here?
[00:01:39] And as the. The figure turned around, he said it was shorter than. Than me, but as he turned around, it wasn't me. And I disappeared. And it scared him.
[00:01:51] And that was the only time that had happened. But then he told me a couple years later, I feel like someone's breathing on my neck. And I thought maybe it's the air vent in his room. But the air vent was blowing the other way. And he would say, I feel like she's here.
[00:02:05] And he didn't talk about a lot. It was just once or twice. And so a couple years had gone by between him seeing the person he thought was me upstairs and. And feeling like someone was in his room.
[00:02:19] Just probably three years ago, I was walking into our half bath, which is on our side hall downstairs, and this figure comes running past me.
[00:02:33] I assume it's a female, long, dark, brownish red hair, like really frizzy, really long, not even 5ft tall, kind of an Aztec kind of blanket shawl on her is flying past me in the house.
[00:02:50] Well, you would think, well, maybe that. Maybe that was your Daughter, no, daughter was sitting in the den. It wasn't her.
[00:02:57] And didn't really hear, like feet and all this. Just. Just saw it. And I thought, this is really strange. I know I'm not losing my mind. I know I've looked at the screen a lot today, but I saw somebody. And normally I would get really freaked out about things like that, but for some reason I wasn't scared. I just thought, okay, maybe this is the same being spirit that my son's been seeing for a while.
[00:03:23] So my husband stayed home from Mass a couple years ago and said he was going to cook dinner for us. When we got back, we were going to an evening Mass and he was working in the kitchen. All the food was going. And he went in the dining room and sat down and he turned on his phone to watch a show because he knew we were going to be home in a few minutes. And that same spot where I saw her run past in the bathroom, he hears someone talking, like really fast. It's a female voice. The TV's not on the. In the den, his volumes turned down on his phone. There's no other TVs on in the house. No music is playing. And he hears this jabber. It's not English. He doesn't know if it's another language or someone's talking in tongues, but it's a female voice. And he said it really freaked him out. And it went on. It didn't go on for just like a couple seconds. Seconds. It went on for a while. So when we got home, he pulled me aside. He was like, something's going on in this house. He said, between what you've told me and everything. And then a week or two later, my daughter walked in the house and we were kind of joking around and she walked in, she said, I'm hearing weird noises. I'm going to come in when you come in. So I didn't hear what she heard. By the time I came in, I didn't hear it. So it's just kind of been this pattern of things happening once in a while. It's not every day.
[00:04:41] Soon after that, my husband and I were folding clothes in the master bedroom downstairs. And it's two rooms from the foyer from the front door. And it was a Friday afternoon. My daughter was still in high school and it was about 20 minutes before she would normally get home.
[00:05:00] And we heard the dogs all run to the front door. And the motion sensor wasn't working well on the door, so we didn't hear like the beep from the security system. And we heard hello. Sounded just like my daughter. The dogs are all dancing around, dancing around. We couldn't see the front door from the bedroom, but we just assumed she was home early for some reason and, you know, maybe her ride picked her up. And they were the first ones in the. In the car line. And we didn't say anything. We were folding clothes, and you hear the dogs just playing, playing, playing. I thought, she'll be in in just a minute. Well, we're putting laundry, you know, clean clothes in the drawers and the closet and all that. And we didn't even realize, like, 20 minutes had gone by. And she walks in the door and she's like, hey, I'm home.
[00:05:42] And we're like, come here just a minute.
[00:05:45] You've been home for about 20 minutes. The dogs were all playing at the door. She said, no, the dogs are asleep in the den. I'm like, well, yeah, we knew that they went back and settled down, but I thought maybe you went back outside or went upstairs. When did you get home? And she said, just now. I look on the ring camera, and she was telling the truth. She had just walked in. So the dogs were excited to see someone. We heard someone say hello. We don't know who it was.
[00:06:14] So then just in the past couple months, my husband was sitting in the den, and he hears over near our dining room and in our foyer, if you've been in our house, he hears a lady's voice, same voice we've heard before, kind of the same tone. And she says, Kathy, no TVs are on, no phones are on, nothing's going on. He gets up, he looks around. No one's here.
[00:06:41] So, you know, you would say, well, what are you going to do about all this? Are you scared? No. No. So, like, if. If I were 10 years old, I wouldn't be sleeping at night. I'd be nervous. I'd be freaked out. But nothing bad is happening. She's just. She's just here. And I don't feel like she's making herself known every day.
[00:06:59] She does like to play jokes on my husband. He has a Samsung phone. I think it's an Android. He's the only one with the Android in the house. This big flat phone. And if he puts it down somewhere flat, like on an end table, a dining room table or whatever, the thing will turn and flip and land on the floor.
[00:07:20] And sometimes it goes on multiple times a day. And then it'll go a couple weeks and nothing happens. And then it happens again. So she's definitely messing with him. There'll be small things of mine that go missing, like a hairbrush, a key, a bottle of moisturizer, something I'm getting ready to put up, something I'm getting ready to use. And I can walk through the house like I'm losing my mind, come back, and it's there again.
[00:07:43] So something's definitely going on.
[00:07:47] The one big thing that I find interesting is the doors to my office are these black French doors. And my great grandmother, her house was up near Table Rock State park, where all the wildfires were Back when the children were little, she had not lived in the house. She had passed away back in the 80s, and the house had just been rented for years and was going downhill. And my parents decided that they were going to tear the house down. Just it wasn't safe, and it really wasn't worth doing a rebuild on it. And the one thing that I remember from that house was the interior French doors that went from kind of the dining area to the living area. And I said, I want those doors. And my dad pulled me aside. He's like, wendy, that house is trashed. There is no way that those doors are. You're going to be upset if you come up there looking for those doors. They're going to be broken, cracked. They're probably not even on the hinges. And I said, well, you need to promise me that if you get there and those doors can be painted and cleaned and they're not broken, that you'll have them set aside for me, and I will bring them home and get them redone.
[00:08:56] And I walked in the house probably an hour after he had gotten there, and they were sitting to the side, and I started to cry. They were the only things in the house that were not broken. And I have the original hardware, the doorknob, everything on it. I had them painted white at first. Now I've had them painted black. They look awesome.
[00:09:14] And so those doors open on their own, and they fly open. They don't fly open enough where they hit where the glass would break.
[00:09:22] But I feel like once every two or three weeks, it's not when the H VAC system's on. It's not when the door's been open and closed and there's a breeze in the house, they just fly open.
[00:09:36] So that has happened on a couple phone calls before, and it does startle me a little bit. But I don't know if that's somebody in my family trying to tell me something or if that's the spirit that lives in our house. I don't know who it is. I don't know if it's somebody who has unfinished business with someone here.
[00:09:55] I don't know if it's relative.
[00:09:58] I assume the subdivision was on farmland years ago.
[00:10:03] Maybe. Maybe it's from that. So we've tried a little bit of everything. You know, it kind of got annoying when his phone, my husband's phone, kept flipping on the floor, Things would go missing. Um, the dogs will notice things. And I know dogs are that way. And, you know, maybe it's a shadow on the wall, but sometimes they'll just stop and all look at the same spot on the wall. And you just wonder, did they see something that we don't see? I don't know.
[00:10:27] So we've tried the holy water, We've tried the prayers. We talked to our priest about it. We talked to the priest about it after we got. I think it was right after we got married last year. And he even offered to send the assistant priests over to do a blessing. He said they would have to ask the bishop and. And if it was bad enough, maybe some type of. I don't know if they call it exorcism. I call it exorcism.
[00:10:49] I didn't take them up on it because I didn't know what all was involved. And it's like, if. Do you get the dogs out of the house? Do we have to be out of the house? Do we have to be in the house? And I thought, you know, I don't want to take up their time.
[00:10:59] She's not causing a lot of problems. I've told her, as long as you don't scare me, as long as you don't startle me, besides slamming the doors open, you can stay. So, you know, my hairdresser will laugh and ask me about the ghost. I have clients that ask me about the ghost. I have friends that ask me about the ghost. And I'll either. I'll say, haven't heard from her recently, haven't seen anything recently, or there'll be something crazy going on.
[00:11:25] That's just kind of what's going on here. So when people say you work by yourself or yourself. Well, for the most part, I have a ghost with me. I don't know how much help she is. She keeps me on my toes sometimes.
[00:11:40] My mother's always said, don't tell anybody about it. When you get ready to sell the house, you'll never be able to sell the house. I think she adds some charm to it. You know, she's not doing anything to really hurt anything around here, but she's, she seems to like it here.
[00:11:56] So we'll see. You hear the dogs barking right now? Maybe they had another sighting. But that's really it. That's it for this week. So I'm confessing to you that we have a ghost in our house. And I do think she's real, and I don't think she's dangerous. Do I think she's trying to tell me something? Maybe sometimes maybe if I paid a little more attention or focused on it, I would know. But for right now, we'll just keep sharing the same space and see what happens. And that's it for this week of confessions in the Home Office. And if you like this episode, I hope you will share it, follow it, subscribe, leave me a comment, let somebody know and and I'll be back next week. Thanks.
